  1. 2012 NHC Proving Ground Products Rapid Intensification Index (RII) Mark DeMaria / John Knaff

  2. Lightning-Based Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification Index (RII) • Ground-based lightning data used as a proxy for GOES-R GLM • Experimental RII version adds lightning density input to predictors in 2012 RII on the NCEP IBM • 6 hr storm-relative composites • Developmental data starts in 2005 • Real time from WWLLN feed at CIRA • Text product distributed from CIRA • ftp://rammftp.cira.colostate.edu/demaria/NHCPG • Three parts to RII on CIRA web page • 2012 operational RII supplemented with TPW, IRPCs and Cione surface flux variable • Lightning version • JHT with multiple time periods and CIMSS consensus

  3. 6 hour WWLLN Lightning Strikes -- Hurricane Omar 16 Oct 2008 RII predictors include inner core (0-100 km) and rainband (200-300 km) lightning strike density

  4. Sample Text Output from 2012 RII products Hurricane Emilia 13 July 2012 12UTC Operational RII, but with TPW, IRPC and J. Cione dry air flux predictors 2. Proving Ground Lightning based RII 3. JHT Extended range and consensus RII Entire 2012 season available from ftp://rammftp.cira.colostate.edu/demaria/NHCPG

  5. Lightning-Based RII Hurricane Emilia RII Values

  6. 2012 NHC Proving Ground Products Super Rapid Scan Imagery Mark DeMaria/John Knaff

  7. Super Rapid Scan Imagery Applications: Captures evolution of short lived and new convective features Early first visible image Enables feature/cloud tracking near the eyewall Current Capabilities: Two 8 minute bursts an hour complementing the routine and Rapid Scan (~ 7 min) imagery. Limitations: Cannot be called if TS/Hurr Watch or Warnings are up, or if there is a moderate severe wxthreat in the U.S. 2012 Priorities: Short time periods near sunrise Major U.S. landfall case Use GOES-14 if possible Coordination with NASA HS3 experiment Tropical Storm Nate(2011) 11 Sept 11:45 to 12:45 UTC POC: John Knaff, Mark DeMaria, Dan Lindsey, C. Velden

  8. 2012 NHC Proving Ground Products Natural ColorImagery Mark DeMaria/Don Hillger/Steve Miller

  9. Natural Color Imagery • ABI has no green channel • GOES-R Imagery Team developing algorithm for green estimate • Used to create natural color • Approximation to true color • Available again in 2012 from CIRA TC real time web page 2011 PG Version (Irene) 2012 PG Version with mods due to 2011 PG tests
