Who is Claude Monet? • The leader of a group of French artists called the Impressionists, which included many famous painters such as Camille Pissarro and Pierre Renoir. • Born: November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. • His early art teacher was Eugene Boudin, who encouraged Monet to work out of doors. • Painted simple landscapes and scenes of contemporary middle-class society. • First Impressionists exhibition are extremely loosely structured, and the color was applied in strong, distinct strokes. • Death: December 5, 1926 at Giverny.
What is Impressionism? • Definition: 19th century art movement that developed first in France. • Style: visible brush strokes, open composition, and emphasis on light in its changing qualities.
Fun Facts • Monet was more interested in how something looked when the sunlight was on it. • Monet almost never left Europe and never visited to Japan. But, he surrounded himself with Japanese woodblock prints. • Monet liked to paint about nature, boats, oceans, lakes, and ponds. • Monet started out doing caricatures. • The Impressionist movement was named after one of his paintings, Impression: Sunrise. • Monet continued to paint even though his eyesight failed.
