  2. History of FBI • Created in 1908 • Made up of former detectives and Secret Service men • Founded by Charles Bonaparte during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency Charles Bonaparte

  3. Beginning of FBI • Could not carry weapons without special permission • Could not make arrests • Only dealt with large scale crime (opium smuggling and stolen vehicles)

  4. FBI Today • Investigates a wide range of crimes with priority in terrorism, espionage, and cyber crimes • Pays most attention to Public Corruption- corruption of an official • Investigate organized crime, white collar crime, and violent crime

  5. FBI Today • 56 field offices in major cities • 60 international offices • 35,902 employees: • 13,785 Special Agents • 22,117 support professionals FBI Headquarters in Washington D.C.

  6. Law Branch of FBI • Plays important role in capturing suspect • Issue warrants to special agents • Can issue up to 6,500 warrants at once • Holds power to kill someone, capture a fugitive, and let suspect go • Sets the rules for what is allowed when attempting to capture FBI Warrant

  7. What does it take to become a Special Agent? • Commitment, knowledge, skill • Willing to be moved to any location without prior warning • Between ages 23-37 • 20/20 Vision • Hear at 25-45 decibels Must have compassion and respect for U.S. Constitution

  8. What does it take to become a Special Agent? • Physically fit, flexible • 4 required tests to see if you are in shape: • Maximum sit ups in one minute • 300 meter sprint • Maximum push ups, no time limit • Timed 1.5 mile Sit ups test

  9. What does it take to become a Special Agent? • 4 year degree from a college or university recognized by the U.S. secretary of education • Previous work experience of at least 3 years • Qualify at 1 of 5 Special Entry programs: • Accounting • Language • Law • Diversified • Computer Science/Information Technology

  10. Special Agent Training • Attend FBI Academy in Virginia for 20 weeks learning investigating, interviewing, forensics, ect. • Shoot and gun control

  11. What do Special Agents Investigate? • 5 sections: • Intelligence • Counterintelligence • Counterterrorism • Criminal • Cyber • Special agents that are very skilled may be able to handle bombs and nuclear weapons

  12. Famous Cases Al Capone, a famous criminal that was brought down by the FBI Jonestown massacre, a horrible mass suicide that the FBI had to go in and solve KKK series that was stopped by the forces of the FBI

  13. Famous Cases Pearl Harbor’s attack was investigated by the FBI. It was found that double agents were involved in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. 9/11, a still deep wound in America, was researched by the FBI to find out who did this act of terrorism and bring him to justice
