  1. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DIRECTOR’S REPORT FOR 2004. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  2. ISC received more than 6800 data files from 120 agencies • 9% of the data files arriving to the ISC required manual intervention. • 9 new parsers were written and more than 70 were modified. • ISC’s data base has increased by 3.3 Gb (out of a total of 34 Gb). DATA COLLECTION ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  3. New Data Contributors - 2004 Georgia – Institute of Geophysics, Academy of Science. Kazakhstan National Data Centre. Russia– Geophysical Survey, RAS, Siberian Branch. Baykal Regional Seismological Centre, Irkutsk. Thailand– Thai Meteorological Department. Venezuela– Fundacion Venezolana de Investigaciones Sismologicas. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  4. New Data Contributors - 2005 Algeria–Centre de Recherche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Geophysique. Iran– University of Tehran Lebanon-National Council for Scientific Research. Oman–Sultan Qaboos University. Turkey- TUBITAK Iraq– Iraq Seismic Network. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  5. DATA COLLECTION Data collected from more than 3000 seismic stations ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  6. ISC analysts manually review every event that complies with one of the following conditions: • The reported magnitude is higher than 3.5. • The event was reported by at least 2 agencies • The event was recorded at a distance greater than ~1000 km. • An ISC solution is provided when: • There are more than 4 phase readings (P or S). • The solution converges successfully. • ABOUT 3500 EVENTS WITH MORE THAN 150000 ASSOCIATED READINGS ARE REVIEWED EACH MONTH Data Processing and Analysis ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  7. Since October 2004, after 3 years of intensive development work, all data review and analysis are routinely performed with the modernized ISCloc software, replacing the 20+ years old REVISER Bulletin Review and Analysis ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  8. The Bulletin for 2002 was completed; out of 214,683 seismic events, 37,543 (17.5%) were edited by ISC seismologists. • ISC Bulletin seems to be complete for mb≥4. • There is still an increase in the number of reported seismic events and phase readings. • The routine ISC Bulletin editing and distribution legs 24 months behind the last date of occurrence Bulletin Review and Analysis ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  9. The ongoing growth of the ISC data base ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

About 10,000 inquiries about seismic stations About 5,000 inquiries about bibliographical data (decrease by almost 30% compared with 2003). About 11,000 downloads of documents and programs. About 18,000 downloads of Bulletin data or Catalogues (increase of about 25% compared with 2003). INTERNET DATA SERVICES ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  17. SUMMARY OF THE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR 2004. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  18. The exchange rate US$ / £ increased significantly once again from $1.77 to $1.92 at the year end. In fact, expressed in British Pounds, actual contributions from institutional members fell 4.0% from 2003 to 2004 despite the increase in the unit rate of membership. At year-end, some 9.6% of 2004 membership contribution invoices were unpaid. No unpaid contributions were written off because eventual payment is anticipated in all cases. Income from printed products was close to the budget and CD sales were greater than expected. Total income in £was less than expected by almost 10%. INCOME ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  19. New Members • Joined in 2004 • Centre de Rechearche en Astronomie, Astrophysique et Geophysique, Alger. • Joined in 2005 • Institute of Earth Sciences, Academica Sinica, Chinese Taipei. • Central Weather Bureau for Taiwan province, Chinese Taipei. • Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia di Geofisica Sperimentale, Trieste, Italy. 20. Income Expenditure ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  21. PERSONNEL: Salaries, Pension, Recruiting, Repatriation. • Salaries follow the UK academic salaries scales. • Personnel costs were 3.2% less than planned due to the early leave of Dr. R. Luckett. • OTHER OVERHEAD: Building maintenance; computing expenses, travel by both the staff and the committee and the cost of consumables. • The refurbishments budget of £6,000 was not used. • The staff travel expenses were supported from other sources. Expenditures ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  22. PRODUCTION: • For the first time in almost 30 years the printing was carried out in the United Kingdom with significant amount saved. • The decision to publish 3 times a year without phase data was put into operation. • The cost of production in 2003 was £35,373 and in 2004 it fell by more than half to £16,133. • BAD DEBTS • Mainly unpaid invoices for Bulletins and CDs. • The LOSS on income over expenditure for Dec. 31, 2004 is £9,700 Expenditures ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  23. The available cash (cash in the bank minus money we owe) increased from £100,000 in 2003to £165,670 in 2004 . ( This is equivalent of 6 months operation costs.) 37K Assets 123K The tangible assets (the property) increased from £178,000 to £189,000 ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  24. RESERVE FUNDS: £ 30,000 for bank balances required for the exchange rate. £ 60,700 for computer replacement funds. NET VALUE of ISC’s TOTAL ASSETS: It is the difference between all assets and liabilities and decreased from £401,500 to £393,000 during 2004. This is well within British guidelines for charitable organisations. I Apologize for the mistake in the chart. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  25. WE THANK PROF. JHON WOODHOUSE FOR CHECKING AND APPROVING THE THR FINANCIAL STATEMENT. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  26. Estimate Budget 2005-2007 • The estimations are based on the following assumptions: • The annual subscription rates for members are at the rates agreed at the Governing Council meeting in Sapporo, 2003. We assumed a similar 5% increase for the 2007 rate. • We assume a 3% annual inflation rate for materials. • Personnel costs allow for an annual increase of 5%, which reflects additional performance, output and services. • Building expenses include some minor refurbishments and general maintenance. • Travel costs for 2005 include fares to Chile for ISC staff and Executive Committee members to attend the IASPEI meeting (although travel grants have been applied for). ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005

  27. Estimate Budget 2005-2007 • We assume that 3 agencies (units) will stop their subscription to the ISC. • The Member Contributions are calculated at the exchange rate at the time of writing this document, which was £1 = $1.9 . • A drop in the income is predicted in the number of CDs being sold since each Bulletin will now include a CD containing the entire dataset. • A grant of £45,000 from the Royal Society has been included in 2005 figures but no other grants have been accounted for although they will be sought. • Computing costs include the cost of new equipment this year mainly from the grant of the royal society. • Personal costs are based on expenses during 2004 when we employed Dr. R. Luckett and Dr. N. Ozel. Their positions were not replaced during 2005. ISC's EC & GC meetings - Chile 2005
