Senior Options Monday 5/5- Tuesday 6/16 José Lamela- SO Coordinator
The breakdown: • Steering Committee is made up of Case Managers that will read the proposal • Mentors are the teachers that will meet with the student to help them throughout Senior Options • The sponsor is where they will do the internship their “boss”- they will work with them at a Specific location.
First thing they did: • Think about what they wanted to do. • Two Options: • Internship • Independent projects
Second thing they did: • Found mentor (January 13-17). • A teacher that they can work with.
Role of a mentor • Sit down and speak with them • Help plan/organize/give ideas about an internship. • Discuss the internship- how’s it going, discuss conflicts, etc More
What they are doing now: • Find a Sponsor • Interview the sponsor (mentor can help with questions) • What will they be allowed to do? • Whom will they be working with? • How much time will they be working independently shadowing others, working on teams etc.? • Who will be the direct supervisor? • How much work will they be asked to contribute?
What’snotallowed • Sponsor can’t: • be a relative • paythestudent in anyway • can’tinvolve alcohol/drugs.
Next step, Once they have their sponsor : • Fill out a Sponsor Registration Form by 3/7 • Complete a Proposal by 3/19 (3/7 for independent proposals) • This proposal will be read, reviewed, On 3/26 and approved/request more Info by the SO Steering Committee.
At the end: • Come June students will create a Power Point and present what they did throughout the internship to their mentor, parents, friends, etc. Example 1Example 2
Requirements for Passing • 3rd Quarter: • Complete and hand in all forms • Complete Written Proposal Submitted and Approved. • 4th Quarter • Go to your internship 30 hrs/week • Have a filled out Time Log • Write a Weekly Journal Entry • Meet with Mentor 1 period a week (2 for independent) • Present and submit Evaluation • In case of Failure, the student will complete an internship over the summer with one of the administrators.
Some Advice from previous students: • ”Start looking for an internship early” • “Don’t pick something easy, you WIILL be bored out of your mind” • “choose something that you really want to do when you are older-” • “ “Find an internship that is relatively local. The commute into the city was a nuisance-it’s not that fun travelling to NYC during rush hour.” • Do something that you will never have a chance to do in college and later in life - you will be surprised how much relevant knowledge you gain from a totally new and different internship!””
Some advice/feedback from Parents (last year) • Lamela isthebest! Reallypayattention at the meeting – itwillhelpoutthroughthe Senior Optionspresentation • No, really Lamela is thebest!! • I would suggest that you look at the database. • Really READ your child's proposal before signing it. • I think it is so important that students choose a senior options experience that is a little out of the box, out of their comfort zone, yet realistithe commute to the city is a pain and costly • Try to attendthepresentations at theend-they are trulyamazing • AP exams can be difficultwithscheduling-Plan accordingly
