Vocabulary Games • Give responsibility for vocabulary over to pupils • Let you get on with proper language learning • Large amounts of vocabulary especially for Listening/Reading • You do need to have sorted phonics!
Games • Badge • Rules • Competition • Co-operation • Reward • Routines • Chance • Preparing the game can be their responsibility
Oxford Cambridge Groups of 3: Oxford, Cambridge, Paxman All 3 can use the sheet Meeting vocabulary for the first time Buzz: Use surname + university
The Chase • Good follow on from Oxford Cambridge • Groups of 3: Victim, Chaser, Quiz Master • Only Quiz Master can look at the vocabulary • Victim has head start • Alternate questions. Step forward if correct • Use stationery items or real life chase • Can also be used for grammar
Million Pound Drop • Groups of 2 or 3. One person is Davina • Need 3 miniwhiteboards, one pen, rubber • While Davina prepares the question, the others can look at the vocabulary • When Davina is ready, put away sheets • Each round one question, 3 possible answers • €1.000.000 can be split between answers • Reveal correct answer. Keep money for next round • Also works for comprehension, introducing new concepts etc...
Pointless • Pupils carry out all the preparation – basically testing each other on list of words! • Pupils compile a list of how many/few pupils know the words • Game: Pupils faced with a list of words. They must pick the one they think fewest people knew and say what it means • Lowest score wins

Vocabulary Competition • Takes Vocabulary learning out of Y7 lessons • 4 teams across the year • Vocab each week • Help each other learn it • Individual Test • Team Task • International Leaders mark it • Leader board
Are you older than a 10 year old? • Follows on from Vocabulary Competition • Live and On Stage in Assembly • Team top of leader board gets first pick of 4 teachers (not French teachers) • Teacher can consult pupils
Twin Peaks listening game • Above = understand • Below = don’t • Then try some strategies: eg play vocab game, look at comprehension questions, look at the transcript • And then re-do the listening and compare lines
