What is Ivan’s history? Born in Russia Brought to America at 2 years, 8 months Raised in a foster orphanage from birth Dec. 25th, 2007 (The day Dave & Karin brought him “home”) Screamed himself to sleep his first night Had a brother & a dog before he was in the U.S. Started preschool at Eau Claire, WI then in Coon Rapids Lived in his house 5 years
What is your dream for Ivan? No one said anything about school! Thor- He should be a race car driver. Janna- Finds somebody that appreciates how awesome he is. Karin- Do what he loves to do in life. Dave- Lives out the faith he grows into Ms. Hoff- Challenged, inspired & fulfilled
What is your nightmare? • Ivan- Lightning & Spongebob • Karin- Passages (An center for institutionalized children) • Dave- Misunderstood- That he’d be labeled and dismissed • Marcus- His friends would be in far away places • Both parents initial fear was that he’d be “taken or kidnapped.” Their primary fears were the same as a parent with a child without a disability.
Who is Ivan? I asked for words to describe him Here’s what they said Thor- He has cool toys Dave-Curious Karin-Passionate Dave-Stubborn Karin-Sensitive Dave-Compassionate Janna-Active Ms. Hoff-Explorer Marcus-Lots of friends Nice (Ivan’s word)
Strengths, gifts & abilities Reverse Engineer Ms. Hoff- Loves to research in the library Dave- More determination than anyone I know. He’ll scream at a video game for ½ hour, but he won’t give up Karin- Storytelling-Convinced two of his teachers he has a cat. It’s even in his IEP Thor- Making noise Ivan- Running fast & far Janna- Articulating his feelings
What are Ivan’s needs? • Ms. Hoff- To be able to have some choices • Dave- To know what the plan is • Karin-Outdoor time • Ivan- Help with math • Dave- To be trusted with things • Karin- More teachers like Ms. Hoff • Ms. Hoff- To be empowered (even if he doesn’t know it yet)
An ideal day at school What does it look like? What will it take to make it happen? The right school Improvement in reading & math (goals in IEP) Keep doing what he’s doing (as far as behavior) Adjust to a new teacher • Little bit of music • Library time • Mad Science! • Learn to build things • Learn Russian
MAPS (& the IEP process) in a word In his natural environment… Dave-Grateful Ivan-Fun Karin- Patient (Ivan, parents & teachers have had to be) Janna-Evolving Ms. Hoff- Useful
Recommendations • Let Ivan & family know the “plan” in advance-school day, etc • Include Ms. Hoff on future IEP team • Have IEP team meet before new school year and within 4 weeks to assess new environment • Create self-monitoring strategy for Ivan to use to track his behavioral goals • Para support for writing & math • Continue to provide services within classroom as long as his needs are able to be met
