Three Unforgivable Sentence Errors Sentence Fragment--missing subject or verb; result is nonsense Run-on Sentence--two independent clauses joined by a conjunction and no punctuation, or two independent clauses simply run together. Comma Splice--two independent clauses strung together with a comma

    3. Sentence Fragment Some parts of this picture are certainly missing. This fellow is clearly fragmented--he needs to be rescued.

    4. Run-on Sentence See what happens to these parts of a run-on sentence that are allowed to keep going. In the same way, they may lose the reader’s attention.

    6. Correcting Sentence Fragments Add the fragment to the previous sentence, making the proper changes in capitalization and punctuation. Add the fragment to the next sentence, making the proper changes in capitalization and punctuation. Add subjects, verbs, or other words necessary for a complete sentence.

    7. Practice: correct these sentence fragments (italicized) in the suggested manner. When I got here. My friends had already arrived . When I got here this morning. When I got here this morning. My friends had already arrived.

    8. To Correct a Run-on Make 2 complete sentences, inserting capitals and punctuation as needed. Use a semicolon between the 2 independent clauses. Use a comma plus a coordinating conjunction between the two clauses. Use a semicolon, plus a conjunctive adverb, plus a comma between the two clauses. Subordinate the clauses, making one dependent and one independent.

    9. Practice Correcting Run-Ons Using each of the 5 methods explained, correct this run-on sentence.

    10. Correct this Comma Splice using each of the 5 methods: The rain is pouring today, nobody wants to be outside.
