  2. Goals: • Demonstrate one approach to the Assessment. • Provide opportunity to learn from Missouri’s successes and failures. • Provide resources available from Missouri which could be of use to other states.

Key Components of Missouri’s Assessment • 12 Issue Themes • Synopsis • Desired Future Conditions • Conditions, trends, threats and opportunities related to achieving DFC’s • Tie-ins to other existing plans • Priority Forests, Landscapes and Urban Areas • Methodology and results • Profiles for priority areas • Multi-state priority areas

  4. Missouri’s Methodology for Delineating Rural and WUI Priority Forest Areas

  5. Definitions: Priority Forest (Rural and WUI) = Areas of especially high forest/woodland conservation opportunity. Priority Forest Landscape (PFL)= Landscape of Priority Forest with a designated stakeholder group collaborating towards a collective vision of conservation and sustainability. Priority Forest is high priority regardless of whether it is located in a Priority Forest Landscape!!!

  6. Stratification Exercise ¼ acre grid cells are evaluated w/ 8 Data Sets: 1. Biodiversity 2. Forest Productivity/Carbon Sequestration 3. Soil and Water Conservation 4. Recreation/Social Values 5. Forest Patch Size 6. Current Harvest Pressure 7. Insect and Disease Vulnerability 8. Housing Density Projections For more info on these data sets, see website…

  7. Delineating Urban Priority Areas (UPA’s) Urban Priority Area = Metropolitan area which stands to gain the most from “urban” strategies.

  9. Working with Partners and Stakeholders

  10. Lessons Learned from our Stakeholder Meetings: • Conduct an internal trial run. • Set realistic expectations. • Focus on stakeholder feedback rather than providing outreach. • Don’t assume your agency already has all of the answers. Even if you do, it is highly informative to learn what stakeholders are thinking. • Provide multiple opportunities for feedback.

  11. Closing Thoughts… • Statewide Forest Resource Assessments and Strategies take a lot of time!!! • An opportunity, not just a mandate…
