  5. Interior Monologue What is it? • Literary device • Presents the private thoughts and emotions of a character • Characters’ thoughts are revealed in a way that appears to be uncontrolled by the author

  6. Also known as… • Inner voice • Internal speech • Stream-of-consciousness • Often sounds “disjointed” or “fragmented”

  7. How/where is it used? • Reveals the thoughts and feelings of a character in a short story or narrative

  8. On your own, reflect and answer… In interior monologue, proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are often overlooked. Why???

  9. Examples: Ok, I’m going to type an example of interior monologue here. I really hope I can get one figured out or I’m going to have to look one up. Are the students even going to understand this? Are they going to find this relevant? Did I remember to lock my door today? Oh shoot – it’s almost lunchtime. Ok, gotta get some examples written. Back to work.

(creaking up not playing with a full deck lostya marbles guy just went looney tunes he went up and over the high side went bananas lost his football went crackers nuts half a seabag) All meaning the same thing: losing your mind.“No,” he whimpered, hardly aware that he had been reduced to this, whimpering with his eyes shut like a child. “Oh no, God. Please, God no.”
