  4. Interior Monologue(Modernist Literary Concept #4) 02/06/14

  5. Interior Monologue What is it? • Literary device • Presents the private thoughts and emotions of a character • Characters’ thoughts are revealed in a way that appears to be uncontrolled by the author

  6. Also known as… • Inner voice • Internal speech • Stream-of-consciousness • Often sounds “disjointed” or “fragmented”

  7. How/where is it used? • Reveals the thoughts and feelings of a character in a short story or narrative

  8. On your own, reflect and answer… In interior monologue, proper grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure are often overlooked. Why???

  9. Examples: Ok, I’m going to type an example of interior monologue here. I really hope I can get one figured out or I’m going to have to look one up. Are the students even going to understand this? Are they going to find this relevant? Did I remember to lock my door today? Oh shoot – it’s almost lunchtime. Ok, gotta get some examples written. Back to work.

  10. “Ulysses” – James Joyce (the king of interior monologue) a quarter after what an unearthly hour I suppose theyre just getting up in China now combing out their pigtails for the day well soon have the nuns ringing the angelus theyve nobody coming in to spoil their sleep except an odd priest or two for his night office or the alarmlock next door at cockshout clattering the brain out of itself let me see if I can doze off 1 2 3 4 5 what kind of flowers are those they invented like the stars the wallpaper in Lombard street was much nicer the apron he gave me was like that something only I only wore it twice better lower this lamp and try again so that I can get up early

  11. “The Shining” – Stephen King He closed his eyes and all the old phrases began to parade through his mind, it seemed there must be hundreds of them. (creaking up not playing with a full deck lostya marbles guy just went looney tunes he went up and over the high side went bananas lost his football went crackers nuts half a seabag) All meaning the same thing: losing your mind.“No,” he whimpered, hardly aware that he had been reduced to this, whimpering with his eyes shut like a child. “Oh no, God. Please, God no.”

  12. “The Sound and the Fury” – William Faulkner Thinking it would be nice for them down at New London if the weather held up like this. Why shouldn’t it ? The month of brides, the voice that breathed She ran right out of the mirror, out of the banked scent. Roses. Roses. Mr. and Mrs. Jason Richmond Compson announce the marriage of. Roses. Not virgins like dogwood, milkweed. I said I have committed incest, Father, I said. Roses. Cunning and serene. If you attend Harvard one year, but don’t see the boat-race, there should be are fund. Let Jason have it. Give Jason a year at Harvard.

  13. Exit Slip (on a half sheet of paper, please!) Knowing what you know about Modernism, WWI, and the affect it had on writers and artists, why do you think Modernist authors would use interior monologue as a literary device?

  14. Internal Monologue lyricsI am a catalogue of failureAnd falling flat on my faceThe only constant in my life is myMy lack of faithfulnessWould it be easier if I walked through lifewith a bag over my head?Would you rather I sewed my lipsinto silence and remained like the dead?I've been saving up all my hope for thisA single purchase of significanceListen upHear me outGet a hold of itHe can save you if you just let him[2x]How, how can you overlook all the good in your life?

  15. Hemingway and WWI… • An eye problem prevented Hemingway from joining the US Army, so he served as an ambulance driver with the Italian army • After the war, he returned to Europe as a journalist

  16. Later life… • Won a Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize • Seriously injured in a 1953 plane crash in Africa and never fully recovered mentally or physically • Committed suicide in 1961 after years of suffering despair and paranoia
