Reconquistia1,000-1492 AD • 700s-1,000s • Muslims control most of Iberian Peninsula. • Great time of scholarship. • Some Christian kingdoms try to retake Spain. • 1,100s • Muslim unity begins to weaken • Christians begin to question church teachings 1085 Castile won victory against the Moors and inspired other Christian kingdoms to fight. 1140 Portugal becomes an independent nation 1269 Reconquista was declared a success. Most of the Iberian Peninsula, except Granada, was under Christian control. 1479 Ferdinand and Isabella become king and queen of their countries and unify all of Spain. • 1492 • Ferdinand and Isabella conquer Granada • Jews must convert or leave. • Inquisition • Columbus

Who did Spanish Christians try to drive out of their lands? • Spanish Christians tried to drive Muslim Moors (and Jews) out of their lands. • 2b. What was the purpose of the Spanish Inquisition? • The purpose of the Spanish Inquisition was to find and punish non-Christians and heretics in Spain. • 2c. How might Spanish history have been different if the Spanish had not defeated the Moors? • Spain might have remained a Muslim country. There would have been no Spanish Inquisition or more religious tolerance would have existed in Spain or Europe all together. Columbus may not have “discovered” the “New World.” • 3. How did kings and other rulers punish Jews in the Middle Ages? • Rulers punished Jews by forcing them out of many countries including Spain.

  11. Reconquista • Efforts by Christian Kingdoms to reconquer Spain from the Muslim Moors • began in 700s & ended in 1492. • Increased religious devotion after Crusades • Christian knights went to Spain to fight Muslims • Led by Kingdoms of Aragon & Castile

  13. Reconquista • By the 1250s the Moors maintained only the southern tip of the peninsula- the kingdom of Granada The Alhambra- palace of the Moorish kingdom of Granada

  14. Portugal & Spain • Portugal split off in 1139 & formed kingdom • Ferdinand of Aragon & Isabella of Castile marriedin 1469 and founded Spain • Spanish Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand Very devout Catholic rulers

Ferdinand & Isabella • Between 1482 and 1492, Isabella and Ferdinand waged the Granada War to conquer all of Spain and unite it as one Christian kingdom • In 1492, they succeeded in defeating the last Moorish King, Boabdil • At first the Catholic Monarchs allowed the Moors to worship and govern themselves • Eventually they began requiring the Moors to convert to Christianity

  16. Spanish inquisition • Ferdinand & Isabella wanted only Christians in their kingdom… All other religions were forbidden. • Goal was to remove heretics, all non-believers or anyone who opposed Church teachings. • Frequently used torture to get confessions • Led by Torquemada-Grand Inquisitor

  17. Inquisition methods • Under Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor, the Inquisition sought to find these heretics • To get these heretics to confess, inquisitors would employ threats and torture • Thousands were tortured, imprisoned for life and/or burned at the stake in auto de fe (Act of Faith)

  20. Jews expelled • Torquemada decided that the reason there were so many heretics was that Spanish Jews were a bad influence, so hundreds of thousands of Jews were forced from Spain

  21. Spain a unified Catholic country • The Inquisition and expelling of the Jews and Moors was so successful, that by the 1500’s, Spain was almost completely Catholic • In the process, Isabella and Ferdinand became the most powerful kings in Europe
