Freebie Your one free homework answer.
Starting today, I am going to do one of your homework problems for you every day. In the future, I may do this by video, but for now, I’m trying a slide slow. This homework problem will be known as the daily “freebie.” Today’s freebie is problem 4b: Consider the expressions 851 X 29 and 849 X 31. Which would result in a larger product? Use a diagram to demonstrate your result.
Think about the picture from the previous homework problem: Is there a way that we could write the expressions 851 X 29 and 849 X 31so that we could put them into the picture above?
What if we wrote 851 × 29 as (849 + 2) × 29 and wrote 849 × 31 as 849 × (29 + 2)? Then we could make a picture that looked like this: The first picture represents the expression 849 × 31, and the second picture represents the expression 851 × 29.
Both expressions contain the rectangle that is 849 × 29 plus one other rectangle. The area of the extra rectangle in the first picture is given by 849 × 2. The area of the extra rectangle in the second picture is given by 29 × 2. Clearly, 849 × 2 is bigger than 29 × 2, so the first expression, 849 × 31, results in the larger product.
For the answer on your homework, just draw this picture: And circle the one that gives you the biggest result.
