Definition of information system • A system for managing and processing information, usually computer-based. Also, a functional group within a business that manages the development and operations . of the business’s information . • Classifications of information system • Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) • Decision Support Systems (DSS) • Expert Information Systems (EIS) • Management Information Systems (MIS) • Office Automation Systems (OAS)
Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) • designed to process routine transactions efficiently and accurately. • A business will have several (sometimes many) . • Decision Support Systems (DSS) • designed to help management make decisions in situations where there is uncertainty about the possible outcomes of those decisions. • Executive Support Systems (ESS) • It gathers, analyses and summarizes the key internal and external information used in the business.
