Evaluation of P rates & rhizobial inoculant strains on faba bean (Vicia fabae L.) in western Amhara
Objectives • to select the best performing Rhizobial strain for faba bean production in western Amhara, • to determine optimum rate of P fertilizer for faba bean production in western Amhara.
Materials and Methods • Treatments: 13 treatments (4 P rate combined with 3 Rhizobium strains with control treatment without inoculant and P) • 4 P rates ( 0,23, 46 & 69 kgha-1 P2O5) as TSP (0-46-0) side-banded with the seed, • 3 strains R. leguminosarumbv.viciae: • Inoculant 1 • Inoculant 2 • Inoculant 3 • 18 kgha-1 N will be used as a starter for all plots, • Recommended lime rates for each district will be applied, • Source of inoculants: • National soil lab., • Holeta ARC, • Menagesha Biotech PLC
M & M cont. • Design: • RCBD (factorial arrangement), • 3 replications • 2 sets of experiments (with & without lime) • Spacing: • 2m between rep. & 1m between plots, • 2.4m wide * 3m long plot size, • Inter-row 40cm * inter-plant 10cm, • 6 rows gross & 4 rows harvestable, • Seed rate (200kg/ha) & other practices as recommended
M & M cont. • Data to be collected • Stand count/plot: at ~3-4 weeks after seeding, • Plant height at harvest (cm), • Number of tillers/plant, • Days to 50% flowering, • Days to podding, • Nodulation scores at 50% flowering / mid podding, • number of nodules, • size of nodules, • position & color of nodules.
M & M cont. • Days to maturity, • Number of pods/plant, • Number of grains/pod, • 100 grains weight (g), • Max. biomass sample at mid podding (kg/plot), • Biological yield (kg/plot), • Economic yield (haulm & grain yields (kg/plot))
M & M cont. • Soil parameters: • Composite soil sample before planting & from each plot after harvest from depths of 0-15, 15-30 & 30-60 cm, • Soil analyses for N & P i.e., NO3-N on all 3 depths & for P on the 0-15 cm, • Texture (0-20cm), • pH, • Ec (ds/m), • CEC (meq/100g), • OM
M & M cont. • Meteorological data during the season: • air temperature (oc), • soil temp. at planting (oc), • RH (%), • Rainfall (mm), • Data for economic analysis • Labor cost, • Fertilizer cost,… • Budjet:- 54416.25/location
Locations: Farta, Debre-Elias, Baso-Liben, Debark, Meket & Yilmana-Densa • Duration: 2 years (2006-2007 EC) • Responsible: Kindu G. & soil fertility case team of ARARI • Expected output:
