  8. MA OSW ProcessData, Information & Outreach • Convened MA BOEM Task Force on Offshore Renewable Energy (Feds, State, Tribe, Local Electeds) • Significant data and input from MA Ocean Plan informed initial offshore wind locations. • In conjunction with BOEM & USCG, EEA convened over 80 public & stakeholder meetings to date. • Formed Fisheries & Habitat Working Groups

  9. Transportation: commercial fishing

  11. MA Wind Energy Area

  12. MA Developer Interest • Arcadia Offshore Massachusetts, • Condor Wind Energy, • Deepwater Wind New England, • Energy Management Inc., • EDF Development Corporation, • Fishermen’s Energy, • Iberdrola Renewables, • Neptune Wind, • Offshore MW • US Mainstream Renewable Power Offshore

  13. MA Offshore Wind Energy Area Potential 4 GW • Equal to Electricity from MA Coal-Fired Power Plants • Electricity to Power 1.7 Million Households (70% of all homes in Massachusetts) • Clean Air (6,300,000 tons of C02) • Thousands of Clean Energy Jobs

  14. MA Offshore Wind Infrastructure

  15. General Project Overview

  16. PROJECT COMPONENTS • Facility – Landside • Dredging - Waterside • Mitigation

  17. General Project Layout

  18. BENEFITS TO THE PORT • Creates a first-in-the-nation purpose-built facility to support assemble & construction of offshore wind project. • Provides for construction of 1,000 foot long bulkhead capable us sustaining loads of 4,000 lbs/PSF. • Provides New Bedford with new opportunities for heavy marine cargo. • Significant increase economic activity for Massachusetts & SouthCoast area.

  19. Benefits: Environmental • Removal of hundreds of 244,600 cubic yards of contaminated sediments. • Creation of resource areas for winter flounder, shellfish, & wetland habitat. • Environmentally responsible disposal of contaminated soils.

  20. New Bedford marine commerce terminal • Similar Experiences: • Bremerhaven, Germany • Founded in 1827. • Large fishing port. • Serious economic decline in 1980s and 1990s. • Transformed itself as an offshore wind staging location. • Huge economic upturn based on offshore wind construction, servicing, and staging. • Cuxhaven, Germany - Similar experiences.
