What is a Wiki? • Meaning of the name: Wiki is Hawaiian for fast. • A wiki is practically the simplest form of a database. • A wiki is a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a text editor or simplified markup language (Wikitext). • Wikis are typically powered by wiki software (Wikispaces) and are often used to create collaborative wiki websites.
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Adding Pages • To add a page, click on the “New Page” in the left-hand menu. • You will be prompted to “Make a New Page” • Type your page’s name • Click “Create” • A new page will appear • Once you have entered your content, click “Save” to ensure your page is actually created
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Renaming Pages* • Place your mouse over the “Page” button • A drop down menu appears • Click “Rename” • A new page will appear • Type the new page name • Check “Add Redirect” • Click “Rename” * = Requires Admin Rights, e-mail admin@siframework.org if you need to rename a Wiki page
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Editing Pages • Click “Edit” in the top right-hand corner of your screen • Directly enter your content into the Wikispaces page • You are able to copy and paste from other text editors • However, the text editors formatting does not directly transfer • Therefore, it is suggested you work directly in the Wiki page as opposed to copying and pasting content • Utilize the toolbar to format and structure your content
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Formatting Text • Use the toolbar to format your text (bold, italicize, underline) • Click the button to change your text’s color and style • Click on the arrow next to “Normal” to apply a heading to your text • Note: If you are seeking to adjust the size of your text, use the button instead, as headings are used in table of contents. • Tip:Do not copy and paste text directly from MS Word into Wiki as formatting will not be retained, and vice versa.
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Structuring Text • Use the toolbar to structure your text • Click the button to create a numerical list • Click the button to create a bulleted list • Click the button to insert a page divider • Tables will be covered on the next slide
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Tables • Click “Table” in the toolbar • Define size and click “Insert Table” • To add Rows/ Columns: • Click in an adjacent row/column (temporarily highlighted in gray). • A drop-down menu will appear • Click “Row” or “Column” • Click “Add Row” or “Add Column” • Click “Add Above” or “Add Below” • You can also change the alignment of cells, rows or columns
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Linking to Wiki Pages • Click “Link” in the toolbar • Type the “Page Name” • As you start typing, Wikispaces will attempt to auto-complete your entry • Type the exact name of the page • Green Check = Wiki page exists • Warning Sign = Wiki page mistyped • Enter the “Link Text” you want to appear on the Wiki page itself • Click “Add Link”
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Linking to External Web Pages • Click “Link” in the toolbar • Click “External Link” • Enter the “Link Text” you want to appear on the Wiki page itself • Enter the hyperlink to the external web page in the “Address” box • Note: You can enter e-mail addresses here as well • Click “Add Link”
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Additional Linking Information • How to Change a Link: • Click on the hyper-linked text • A link toolbar appears below • Click on “Change” • Linking Text: • Highlight the text that you would like to link • Purpose: To link text that is already entered into the Wiki page • Click the “Link” button • Continue forward as you would normally link to a Wiki page
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Uploading Files to Wikispaces • Click “File” in the toolbar • Click “Upload Files” • Navigate to the folder which contains your files • Select the file you would like to upload • Click “Open”
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Linking to Files • Click “File” in the toolbar • Make sure to “Upload Files” (previous slide) • Select “My Recent Uploads” • Select “Link to File” • Click on the file itself • To rename the file on the Wiki page, click on the link • Then click “Change” • Rename the “Link Text” • Click on “Add Link”
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Embedding and Editing Images • Click “File” in the toolbar • Make sure to “Upload Files” • Select “My Recent Uploads” • Select “Embed File” • Click on the file to embed it • Click on the image in the editor • Click here to “Align” the image • Click here to adjust the “Size” • Click here to “Add Link” • If you want your image to take the user to another link
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Widgets • Click “Widget” in the toolbar • Select a widget provided by Wikispaces – a set of instructions will be provided to utilize each widget • You may embed other application into Wiki pages by entering their HMTL code – Wikispaces offers a list of compatible applications along with instructions for how to embed them
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Widget Example:Inserting a Table of Contents • Click in the top-left most corner of the Wiki editor • Click “Widget” in the toolbar • Select “Wikispaces” • Select “Table of Contents” • Click “Embed Table of Contents” • We advise you not to use the “Flat Table of Contents” option • Your widget will appear in the top-right corner of the editor
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs Discussion Tab • Click on the “Discussion” tab • Select a discussion thread you would like to view or respond to • How to start a new thread: • Click “+ New Post” • Enter the “Subject” • Enter the post as the “Message” • Check “Monitor this topic” to receive e-mail notifications • Click “Post” • You can share a specific discussion by right-clicking on the title and copying the link
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs History Tab • Click on the “History” tab • View a past version of the page by clicking on the “Date” itself • How to compare pages: • Click “select” next to the first page • Click “reset” if you selected the incorrect version to compare • If not, click “compare” next to the other version you wish to compare • This compares all changes between the two versions • Green Highlight = Inserted Red Highlight = Deleted • Click here to “Review Changes” one by one
Pages Text Tables Linking Files Images Widgets Tabs “Notify Me” Tab • Click on the “Notify Me” tab • E-mail Notifications: • Select to receive notifications for “Page Edits” and/or “Page Discussions” • Click “Update” • You may also subscribe to RSS Feeds for “Page Edits” and/or “Page Discussions” Note: These apply only for “Page-wide Changes”
Difference between the Visual Editor and the WikiText Editor • Visual Editor: • If you are accustomed to HTML editing or other text editing applications, you may find that the Visual Editor provides an easier and faster way to create and edit Wikispaces pages. • It allows you to enter content as you would in a Word document and apply formatting simply by clicking icons on a toolbar. • Wikitext Editor: • Wikispaces pages are stored internally in a simple content-formatting language called “Wikitext.” • The Wikitext Editor allows you to edit Wikispaces pages directly in the wiki markup language. This has the advantage of being faster than the Rich Text Editor for some formatting tasks. • Accessing the Wikitext Editor: • Click the down arrow next to “Save” in the Wiki editor’s tool-bar • Click on “Wikitext Editor”
