Backgrounder • The first time that attention was drawn to the need to preserve natural habitats • The Conference led in the same year to the establishment of the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) • Agreement on the Climate Change Convention which in turn led to the Kyoto Protocol • Agenda 21 is an action plan of the UN related to sustainable development • The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) • Governments agreed to halve the number of people lacking clean drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. • There was commitment to restore fisheries to their maximum sustainable yields by 2015. • Green Economy ??? • Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development??? • Framework for Action and Follow-Up ???
After 20 years • Climate change is already responsible for 300,000 deaths a year and is affecting 300M people, according to the first comprehensive study of the human impact of global warming. • Economic losses due to climate change today amount to more than $125B a year — more than all the present world aid. • This year nearly 9 million children younger than 5 years old will die needlessly, more than half is of hunger-related causes. • In the developing world, more than 1.4 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1.25 per day.
Rights For Sustainability An NGO which responds to international demand to provide support in research and education to people’s movements and grassroots empowerment and advocacy and links these to International initiatives and networks. Is a platform for advocacy that aims to promote a rights-based approach to sustainable development as a way of ensuring that equity and justice are central concerns in the reform agenda at Rio+20 and beyond.
CSO Consultation on the African Agenda to the Rio+ Summit • examine the content of the draft outcome document for Rio+20, and identify major issues of concern to civil society (particularly in terms of rights and equity implications); • examine the negotiating positions of member-states from the region; and • strategize civil society inside and outside engagement (lobbying and campaigning) in the UNCSD process.
