What is summarizing? Summarizing is restating in your own words the meaning of what you’ve read. It means you use different words from those used in the original. No copy cats allowed!
What do I include in a summary? Make it short. Make sure it is to the point and contains the BIG IDEA of the text. Omit trivial information Don’t retell or copy the text. Give the highlights of what you read, not every detail.
Examples of Good Summaries Obituary of a famous person Report of a basketball or football game that captures the highlights. A blurb on the back of your library book.
Strategies to Use One way to summarize is by using this “formula”. • Somebody • Wanted to • But • So • Then The other strategy is to use the 5 W’s and How. Who? What? When? Where Why? How? This one is like writing a news story.
