Welcome to Mrs. Thornton’s T.E.A.M Together Everyone Achieves More
Coach and Players My Job vs. Your Job I Care for you, I want you to succeed. You will succeed.
Attitude • All we ask is that you try • DO NOT smack your lips, tsk, exhasperate loudly, roll your eyes or show disrespect with gestures • Don’t bring the drama
Attitude…And more Attitude Respect is an earned quality. If you show it, you get it. The following doesn’t work with Thornton… Saying… “Oh, My God!” “I did it because, he/she did it.” “I don’t care.” “I’m not doing this.” “I don’t want to.” “Why do we have to?” “Why do we have to learn this?” “This is stupid.”
More Attitude, really?? The following also doesn’t work with Thornton… -lying -cheating -whining -putting down others
Be Honest no matter what • Accept that you are going to make mistakes and move on • A team can not succeed if we are not honest. We must accept when we do well and when we don’t do as well as we might like • I will Respect your honesty
ZERO Tolerance • Swearing • Threatening • Name-calling • Teasing • Exclusion • Ridicule • Harassing • Threatening • Put-downs • Disrespect WE DON’T DO THAT IN THIS CLASSROOM, IN THIS CLUSTER OR AT THIS SCHOOL.
RESPECT • We do not comment on our classmates questions or their answers. That is Mrs. Thornton’s job.
Rachel’s Challenge “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.” • Look for the best in others • Dream Big • Choose positive influences • Speak with kindness • Start your own chain reaction
5 Core Values What do they look like? 1. Respect 2.Responsibility 3.Integrity 4.Compassion 5.Academic Excellence
On the playing field “in class” • NO GUM • You may bring a water bottle. • You may eat a small snack. • If you are hungry tell me. • Tell me if you don’t feel well. • Tell me if you are in a bad mood, have a problem or are just tired. I can’t be a good coach if I don’t know what is wrong with my players If you are sleepy, stand up
Mrs. Thornton’s Classroom ProceduresPlaybook for a successful team Entering the Classroom • Wait quietly outside the door • Stand next to the lockers • Keeping hands feet and objects to yourself • Do not stand in front of the door • Enter the room and go directly to your seat
Classroom Conduct • My “helper” for the week will hand out the folders • Books placed neatly under the seats • Planner on desk opened to student pass sheet • Writing utensil, eraser, sharpener on desk
Pencils-bring one, borrow one-no sharpening • Get out any homework due-have it ready • Bring a book to read every class • Sit quietly, Be prepared, Always positive, ready to learn
During Class • Listen for instructions from Mrs. Thornton • Follow directions the first time they are given • Bathroom-fill out planner-raise hand-bathroom signal (not during major instruction) • Water break-fill out planner-raise hand-water signal • (not during major instruction)
Sleepy? Antsy?-stand up quietly move to side or back of class-bring materials with you. Do not put your head down on the desk • Absent-students responsibility to get work • My desk area is off limits • If I need to leave the classroom all students will remain in their seats • Fire Drills • Library
Use of the pencil sharpener • Getting help from Mrs. Thornton • Late to class • When there is a new student • When there is a substitute • When a student is called over the speaker.
At the End of Class • Wait until Mrs. Thornton dismisses you • Books returned under desk • “Helper” of the week collects folders and returns them • Students gather belongings and at Mrs. Thornton’s request and line up
Practice makes perfect… • When I assign homework, there is to be no moaning or complaining. This will result in a doubled assignment. • Open planners write it down • Any assignments should always include you first name and last name
The only way to win the game is to get in the game • When answering questions or asking questions simply raise your hands and wait to be called on. Do not squirm, wave your hands or make noises. • Don’t answer outloud stealing the chance for your classmates to answer.
Group Work • We are a team when we work together do not disrespect anyone in your group. If you do the activity will be canceled for the whole class and I will lecture instead
Rewards • Always say thank-you when I give you something. If you do not within ten seconds after receiving the item I will take it back. There is no excuse for not showing appreciation. • When you are given something from someone never insult that person by making negative comments about the gift by insinuating it wasn’t appreciated.
Consequences • If I or any other teacher in the school is speaking to or disciplining a student, do not look at the student. You wouldn’t want others looking at you if you were in trouble or being reprimanded, so don’t look at others in that situation. If you are the student I am talking to, do not get angry or fuss at other students who are looking at you. Let me handle the situation.
Together Everyone Achieves More… We are a team, let’s work together to bring home a winning school year!
