The Internet Has Changed Our World There are 605,000,000 Internet users worldwide - U.S. Department of Justice 90% of teens and young adults ages 15 to 24 have gone online - The Kaiser Family Foundation 48 million children between the ages of 5 to 17 now use computers - National Telecommunications and Information Administration 1 in 4 kids have participated in Real Time Chats - Family PC Survey

Frightening Facts 77 million kids under 18 will have Internet access by 2005! - Computer economics 1 in 4children ages 10-17 have been exposed to pornography online. - Journal of American Medical Association 1 in 5 children have received unwanted sexual solicitation online, 89% occurred in chat rooms or IM. - Pew Study reported in Journal of American Medical Association & NCMEC 1 in 33 kids have received an aggressive solicitation to meet somewhere. - Journal of American Medical Association U.S. Customs estimates more than 100,000 web sites are involved in child pornography.

  26. The Warning Signs Does Your Child… • spend large amounts of time on-line? • make or receive phone calls from someone you don’t know? • receive mail, gifts, or packages from someone you don’t know? • become withdrawn from the family? • use an on-line account belonging to someone else?

  28. What Should You Do If… • you think someone is grooming your child? • someone threatens your child? • someone sends pictures to your child that make him or her feel uncomfortable? You Should: • Talk with your child • Call local law enforcement • Report the incident to the FBI

General Tips For Parents • Keep the computer in an open area • Become part of your child’s online experience • Review your computer files often • Learn about the Internet • Teach your child responsible Internet use • Respect your child’s privacy – rather than “policing” your child’s online behavior, keep the lines of communication open with your child • Teach your children the 4 R’s
