Early-Life "...Early in life, I had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.“-Malcolm x- • Originally born as Malcolm Little • Mothers name was Louise Norton Little, she stayed at home to tend to the 8 children • Father Earl Little was an outspoken Baptist minister and Civil rights activist • The family was often times threated by KKK members for Earl Little’s preaching's and beliefs • He was a smart, motivated student at the top of his class in Jr. high until a favorite teacher told him being a lawyer was an unrealistic goal for someone of his race. Mr. Little then dropped out of school to hit the streets
A Genius born of crime • After dropping school Malcolm moved to Boston, Mass. where he did various odd jobs to make ends meat • From Boston it was onto Harlem, NY which was the beginning of his criminal career committing small petty infractions • By 1942 Malcolm Little upped the ante and was coordinating various narcotics, prostitution, and gambling rings • 1946 Malcolm and his friend “Shorty” Jarvis move back to New York only to be arrested for burglary charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison…this is where his life would be forever changed
Life in the Clink • Malcolm was a man of the streets, he entered prison with an open mind • Though sentenced to 10 years he was parrolled after 7 to join the free world again • In his time on lock he used the opportunity to further his education, learning to read and to write, which he did so furiously • Also while in prison Malcolm began reading on Elijah Muhammad the leader of the Nation of Islam (NOI) • He adopted the religion and before getting out altered his name believing that “Little” was his slave name. He took the “X” to represent his lost tribal name
Fast Facts on the legend • Famous tagline: “By any means necessary” • Early gangster nicknames: Detroit Red, Big Red • Reddish brown hair, brown eyes • Buried at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York • Befriended/ministered boxer Cassius Clay, helped him to adopt Islam, and later in February 1964 this boxer became the man we know as Muhammad Ali • In 1963, the New York Times reported that Malcolm X was the second most sought after speaker in the United States • On June 29, 1963 Malcolm lead the Unity Rally in Harlem. It was one of the nations largest civil rights events
