Task TW6-TSW-003:Study on existing detritiation processes and characterisation of tritiated materials, for application to ITER and DEMO K. Liger CEA Cadarache
Objectives: • For high heat flux operational metallic waste (containing CFC, Be, W): • Determination of the most efficient detritiation treatment. • Evaluation of its feasibility at an industrial scale. • First step of design document • Background: • Former studies on detritiation processes at laboratory or pilot scale • Results from CEA Cadarache • Results from SCK-CEN • Strategy: • Examination of most promising process regarding: • volume of secondary waste • detritiation efficiency (reduction of waste category) • reduction of potential tritium degassing from the waste • compatibility with presence of CFC, Be and W • Calculations of mass and thermal balance. Estimation of the main fluxes • Safety analysis on metals …
DETRITIATION OF METALS (without CFC, Be, W): • Process studied: • In SCK-CEN: • Thermal treatment with and without superheated stream • In CEA-Cad: • Thermal treatment under humid air • Thermal treatment under various gases (argon, air, NH3) • Melting treatment (with or without bubbling of inert gas) • Most promising results: • Melting treatment • Thermal treatment followed by oxidising atmosphere (oxide layer reduces tritium degassing after the treatment) • Choice of best oxidising atmosphere has to be made.
Input data needed: • Environmental restriction (atmosphere release) • Average composition of waste in term of Be, W and CFC (others??) • Average contamination of waste (tritium, others?) • Mass of waste to be detritiated • Time to treat the whole amount or input flowrate of the process • Waste tritium activity after treatment • Surface contamination limit • Degassing limit after treatment • Reference documentation: • ???????????????
PLANNING: • Beginning of the task: 11/2006 • Review of previous work on detritiation processes (02/2007) • First Design (05/2007) • Calculations of mass and thermal balance. (06/2007) • Safety analysis (08/2007)
