Setting • Audience: Timothy (all younger preachers/teachers) • Location of writing: Macedonia or Greece • Date of letter: • After Paul’s 1st imprisonment in Rome. ~A.D. 63 • Most likely before the persecutions of Nero in A.D. 64 • No later than A.D. 67 • Historical Setting: • Between imprisonments as Paul revisits churches • Purpose: • Instructions for conduct within the family of God • Advice for every preacher – young or old

  3. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • How to deal with people • People of different ages: v1-2 • Older widows: v3-10, 16 • Younger widows: v11-15

  4. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • People of different ages • Older people – entreat as fathers and mothers • Eph. 6:1-2 – obey in the Lord and honor • Lev. 19-32 – “Rise up before the hoary head…honor the face of the old man…” • 1 Kings 2:19 – King Solomon bowed to his mother. • Pro. 23:22 – “Hearken unto thy father…despise not thy mother when she is old.” • Why? • Job 32:7 – “multitude of years should teach wisdom.” • Ps. 92:12-15 – “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree… They shall bring forth fruit in old age…to show that God is upright.”

  5. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • Biblical Examples: • Bad Examples: • 1 Kings 12: 6-11 – Rehoboam did not head the advice of the old men but listened to his peers. • Mal. 2:15, Pro. 5:18-19 – Men were seeking younger women. “…rejoice with the wife of your youth…let her…satisfy thee” • Mark 7:11-12 – The Jews were forsaking the care of their parents. • Good Examples: • Paul’s relationship with Timothy

  6. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • People of different ages • Younger people – entreat as brothers and sisters • Not as Cain and Able • Not as Jacob and Esau • Not at Joseph’s brothers and Joseph • Not as Amnon and Tamar • Not as Absalom and Amnon • With the care and love of Mary and Martha for Lazarus • Why? • Respect and rapport • Especially with younger women that there be no impure thoughts

  7. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • Older widows: • V3, 5-6: “Honor widows that are widows indeed.” The honor referred to is one of taking them into the care of the church. This is reserved for those that are destitute and have no one to care for them. They are to be given to good works and not to pleasure. • V4, 8, 16: Primary care for widows falls on the family. Failure to do so positions the individuals worse off than infidels. • Guidelines • V9: 60 or older • V9: Wife of one man • V10: A reputation for good works

  8. 1 Timothy 5:1-16 • Younger widows: • V11: Refuse to support unless there is strong cause to show that they are truly destitute. • Why? • They should be working to support themselves. • If they are supported by the church, their free time will give way to tattling and gossiping. They will be tempted to become meddlesome. • Their passions and desires are stronger, and they will likely seek to remarry potentially departing from their first love, Christ. • It is recommended that they marry, raise children, and care for their family.
