  1. Pregnancy A PowerPoint by Kyle Henry

  2. Table of Contents Conception and Development Milestones (Trimesters) The Stages of Labor Types of Births Prenatal Care Here, you will find links to different sections of this presentation.

  3. Conception and Development • Before a baby even begins to form inside of a woman’s body, a few things must happen: • A sperm and egg cell must meet inside one of the fallopian tubes. • The fertilized egg must travel to the uterus and plant itself into the lining. • The fertilized egg (now called a zygote) will begin to multiply and become a mass of cells.

  4. Conception and Development (Continued) Once the mass of cells, now called an embryo begins to develop, some changes will begin to occur over time, in 3-month sections called trimesters.

  5. Trimester 1 • In the first 3 months of pregnancy this will happen to the baby: • Heart, lungs, brain, nerves and the digestive system form (month 1) • Eyes and ears are formed (month 1) • Arms, fingers, legs and toes are formed (month 2) • Facial characteristics appear (month 2) • Baby is an embryo • Movement begins (month 3) • Baby is now a fetus

  6. Trimester 2 • In the next three months of a pregnancy, these changes will start to occur: • The skin will start to develop (month 4) • Fine hairs called lanugo will begin to grow over the body (month 5) • Nails and eyelashes will appear (month 5) • Fetus will respond to noise and pressure (month 6) • The fetus will begin moving vigorously (month 6)

  7. Trimester 3 • During the third section of pregnancy, these changes occur: • Eyes will open (month 7) • Almost all organs are completed (month 8) • Skin smooth and polished (month 9) • Eyes are the color of slate (month 9)

  8. The Stages of Labor (1) • In the first stage of labor: • The cervix shall dilate to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal • Contractions will begin, and last around a minute and a half each • This stage of labor can last around an hour and a half to fifteen hours

  9. The Stages of Labor (2) • In the second stage of labor: • The baby will move from the uterus into the vagina • The baby will be pushed from the vagina • The baby’s head exits the vagina • This stage can last from thirty minutes to one-and-a-half hours.

  10. The Stages of Labor (3) • In the third stage of labor: • The afterbirth (the placenta, umbilical cord) is delivered • A placenta is the organ that attaches the fetus to the uterine lining via umbilical cord • It regulates nutrients, oxygen, and waste • An umbilical cord (containing 2 arteries and 1 vein) transfers nutrients and oxygen given by the placenta • This stage can last ten to thirty minutes

  11. Other Things About Labor Epidural- A painkiller that can be taken to reduce the stress of birth Lamaze- Skills and classes designed to make the process of giving birth easier Braxton Hicks Contractions- “Fake” contractions that prepare a woman’s body for real ones Apgar Scale- An acronym that stands for activity, pulse, grimace, appearance, and respiration- Used to tell how healthy the baby appears Episiotomy- A procedure by which an incision is made between the anus and the vagina to allow an easier birth to the mother

  12. Other Things About Labor (continued) Amniotic Sac- The sack in which the fetus develops Amniotic Fluid- The liquid found inside the amniotic sac that functions as both temperature control and cushioning Ultrasound- When sound waves are bounced off of a fetus to give an image and track its gowth

  13. Types of Births Cesarean Section- The baby is removed through the abdominal wall due to size Water Birth- When a baby is born while the mother is immersed in water, to reduce stress Stillbirth- When a pregnancy goes full term, but the baby is born dead, usually due to things like radiation and high blood pressure Vaginal Birth- A normal birth, where the baby is pushed through the vagina, into the world Premature Birth- When a baby is born before a pregnancy goes full term (less than 37 weeks) Breech Birth- When a baby is in a feet-first position as opposed to head-first, usually delivered by c-section

  14. Prenatal Care *Prenatal care is important because it is the care that helps a woman to have an easier time during and after pregnancy • Prenatal care is the care that a woman receives before and after birth. This can include: • Visits to the gynecologist, an expert on the female reproductive system • Visits to an obstetrician, an expert on the growth and development of the baby (and infants) • It also includes dealing with problems such as fetal alcohol syndrome, where the fetus is affected by alcohol ingested by the mother, or drug use (such as cocaine) that may also harm the baby
