  1. 126 Announcements • Reflections and Project Assignment #1 will be returned today • Instructions for Project Outline due 5/25 are on CREATE website • Overload: I have more requests for presentations that Exam-time (June 8th) will allow; I need volunteers for office hours and/or class time 10th & exam week

  2. EDS/Soc 126: Topic # 9: Private Schools

  3. Demographic Information About 10% of US school children are in private schools • Parents’ Reasons for Choosing Private Schools: • Moral/religious • College Prep • Avoid desegregation (“white academies”)

  4. Private Schools and Public Schools • Private Schools Considered Superior to Public Schools: • Rigorous Curriculum--more demanding than public schools • Social capital • Discipline policy • Parent investment • COULD ALSO BE: • Student Selection • Student Rejection-private schools can “drop” students (but public schools can not drop students)

  5. Consider Private School on Video* • What were some of the motivations of participants? What were they looking for that they didn't find in public school? • What types of conflicts might arise between these schools and national concerns such as: • --separation of church and state, • --desegregation, • --democratic values, such as equity and excellence for all students? • *(Born Again, Life in a Fundamentalist Baptist Church, jamesault.com)
