Types of Igneous Rocks • Igneous rocks fall into one of the two following categories • Intrusive igneous rocks form underneath the Earth’s surface (magma) • Extrusive igneous rocks form on the Earth’s surface (lava)
Intrusive Igneous Rocks • Take longer to cool down since they are inside the Earth and kept warm by surrounding rocks • This allows their crystals to grow larger
Extrusive Igneous Rocks • Cool much faster since they are on the Earth’s surface • Have small crystals or are glassy • May also be vesicular (have air bubbles)
Magma and Lava • Magma and lava are classified as felsic or mafic
Felsic and Mafic Igneous Rocks • Felsic Rocks: Light-colored, less dense, contain silicon and aluminum, typically continental crust • Mafic Rocks: Dark-colored, more dense, contain iron and magnesium, typically oceanic crust
What is an intrusion? -Any intrusion forms when magma cools inside earth’s interior after forcing its way through other rocks -Also known as a pluton -These rocks are composed of large- grained crystals due to their slow cooling rate
