  2. Commemorating 50 Years of Greening Singapore The year 2013 marks 50 years of greening for Singapore. The City in a Garden that you enjoy today, with its vibrant parks, lush tree-lined roads, and thriving biodiversity is the result of the dedication and commitment of many people to enhance the quality of our living spaces. Our Vision: City in a Garden Singapore’s Garden City journey began in 1963, when then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a mempat tree (Cratoxylumformosum), signifying the start of the greening campaign. Through the dedication and commitment of its pioneers and the community, the city’s landscape has transformed to one where greenery is a major feature.   4. Our Natural Heritage Majestic mature trees are the natural heritage of Singapore and serve as important green landmarks of our cityscape. They help us to identify with and stay rooted to the place we live in. Like our City in a Garden, these trees take decades to mature gracefully and beautify our landscape. As Singapore progresses, there is a danger of losing these mature trees. The Heritage Trees Scheme is in place to address this concern. Find out more here.

  5. Our Natural Heritage Singapore, by virtue of its geographical location, has rich biodiversity, in spite of its intense urbanisation. Dryland tropical rainforests, mangroves and coral ecosystems are some of the key habitats found in Singapore.
