Indications • Cold; acute or chronic pain, injury or spasm • Post surgical pain or oedema • Superficial burns • Relieve of pain • Heat; sub-acute or chronic injuries, to ease pain or spasm, reduction of oedema, increase ROM
Cold Contra-indications • Decrease in sensitivity test for hot/cold or sharp/blunt • Hypersensitivity • Cold allergy, circulatory or sensory impairment • Raynauds’ Disease or cold urticaria • Hypertension, cardiac or respiratory disease • Rheumatoid arthritis or lupus • Uncovered or open wounds
Heat Contra-indications • Acute injuries • Impaired or poor circulation • Lack of thermal sensitivity test • Area which has had recent bleeding • Any malignant tissue
Adverse reactions • Ice burns or frost bite • Increased pain or neurological effects • Reddening of the skin, increased swelling • Chemical burns, allergic reaction • Increase or decrease in BP • Dizziness or headaches
