What 3 groups made up white society? • Planters • 20 or more slaves • 1 in 40 people were planters • Small farmers • 75% of southerners • Owned 1 or 2 slaves • Poor whites • Did not own land • Enjoyed rights denied to all African Americans enslaved or free
How did the South treat free African Americans? • Made laws that made life even harder for them • Not allowed to vote • Not allowed to travel • In some cases had to move out of the state or be enslaved
What were slave codes? • Laws meant to keep slaves from either running away or rebelling • Travel passes • No education • Could not testify in court
What was life like for slaves? • Harsh • Cruel
How did African culture and religion help enslaved African-Americans endure hardships? • They remembered about the ancient Hebrews-this inspired them • Sang religious songs in fields called spirituals • Extended families kept traditions • Sang songs of rebellion • Slave Resistance • Both active & passive forms
