  2. 5 “KEY” Questions: • What three groups made up white society in the South? • How did the South treat free African Americans? • What were slave codes? • What was life like for enslaved African Americans on plantations? • How did African culture and religion help enslaved African Americans endure the hardships of plantation life?

  3. What 3 groups made up white society? • Planters • 20 or more slaves • 1 in 40 people were planters • Small farmers • 75% of southerners • Owned 1 or 2 slaves • Poor whites • Did not own land • Enjoyed rights denied to all African Americans enslaved or free

  4. How did the South treat free African Americans? • Made laws that made life even harder for them • Not allowed to vote • Not allowed to travel • In some cases had to move out of the state or be enslaved

  5. What were slave codes? • Laws meant to keep slaves from either running away or rebelling • Travel passes • No education • Could not testify in court

  6. What was life like for slaves? • Harsh • Cruel

  7. How did African culture and religion help enslaved African-Americans endure hardships? • They remembered about the ancient Hebrews-this inspired them • Sang religious songs in fields called spirituals • Extended families kept traditions • Sang songs of rebellion • Slave Resistance • Both active & passive forms

  8. Slave resistance! • Active resistance • Poisoning their masters • Arson-setting fire to the slave owner’s house • Running away • Rebelling and taking weapons to fight the slave owners

  9. Slave resistance! • Passive resistance • Working slowly • Injuring plantation animals • Pretending to be mad • Slave women taunting the overseers or slave owners • singing
