  2. What is a civil right and civil liberty? • Civil rights- Those rights promised to every U.S. citizen because of the 14th amendment. • Civil Liberties- the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights, as of speech or assembly, without interference by the government.

  3. Religious Freedom • Free exercise clause- The government can’t interfere with religion unless it hurts someone. • Establishment clause- Congress will not make a law that respects only one religion.

  4. Landmark Religious court cases • Wisconsin v. Yoder • Lemon v. Kurtzman • Engel v. Vitale • Epperson v. Arkansas • West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette

  5. Free Speech • Protected -Hate speech- as long as it doesn’t hurt someone -expression that does not hurt anyone (burning a flag) Texas v. Johnson • Not Protected • libel- written • Slander- spoken

  8. Rights of the Accused • Right to remain silent • Right to an attorney • If you can’t afford one, one will be appointed to you. (Gideon v. Wainwright) • No double jeopardy • No cruel and unusual punishment

Citizenship • Born here • Born outside the country to American parent/s • Naturalized here • 5 step process • Expectations for new citizens. • Create a pamphlet of some sort online, on paper, etc… that outlines the steps for a person to become a citizen. Use pictures and easy English for those who may not understand or speak English very well.

  11. What should you do? • If you were unsuspectingly arrested for a crime you didn’t commit, what would you do? Use the amendments and court cases to show how you would progress through the legal system.

  12. Discrimination • Individuals treated unfairly because of their race, religion, gender, ethnic group or physical disability. • Unlawful- making people ride in the back of bus because of color • Lawful- smokers, adults only, bank loans based on income.
