New Literacies involve the skills, social practices, and dispositions that foster life-long learning through online: collaborative inquiry, reading comprehension and content construction.
Online Collaborative Inquiry A Group of local or global learners who arrive at a common outcome via multiple pathways of knowledge

Online Reading Comprehension The skills, strategies, and dispositions necessary to question, locate, evaluate, synthesize, and communicate information during problem based reading tasks that utilize multiple modes of information in networked environments.
Online Reading Comprehension Internet Reciprocal Teaching • Teacher-led demonstrations of basic Internet use skills and cooperative learning strategies • Explicit modeling by teacher • Largely whole class instruction
Online Reading Comprehension Internet Reciprocal Teaching • Students presented with information problems to solve. • Work in small groups to solve those problems. • Exchange strategies as they do so. • Debrief at the end of the lesson. • Initially: locating and critically evaluating • Later: Synthesis and communicating.
Online Content Construction Process by which students construct and redesign knowledge by actively encoding and decoding meaning on the world through the use of ever shifting multimodal tools.

Administrative Role • Define technology as a literacy issue. • Create a schoolwide email system • Have a filter/unfilter 20 minute rule • Invest more in PD than technology • Have long-term 1-1 computing strategy • Encourage and Assess the Digital Footprint
