What is email etiquette and why does it matter? • Email etiquette is an established set of guidelines and expectations for how people should communicate electronically. • Electronic communication, including email, is a big part of our personal, academic, and professional lives. • What you say and how you say it can significantly affect how someone perceives you and your subsequent results. • Proper email etiquette helps get your message across effectively and professionally.

  3. Turn and talk to the person next to you and discuss the question: What are some reasons you would need to use email as a student at SCHS?

  4. What’s in an email? • Subject line: • Keep it clear and direct. • Salutation/Greeting: • Never begin a new email* without a greeting. • Always use the recipient’s name and title, and always spell correctly. • Message: • Always use proper grammar, spelling, and appropriate tone. • Keep the message concise; complex issues or topics should not be addressed through email. • Closing: • Wrap up the message; include an ending remark and your name.

  5. Email Do and Don’t Don’t: Be rude (demanding or accusatory) Be vague Leave the subject line blank Use slang or informal language Assume the teacher knows who the email is from Do: • Be polite • Be professional • Include your full name • Be detailed enough • Make a plan to follow up
