Supported Reading in English (SuRE) This Seed Project investigates how to incorporate the use of Supported Reading as a major teaching strategy in the Reading Workshops for KS2 students.
The objectives are to: • enhance KS2 students’ development in reading skills and strategies • motivate and engage students in reading through a task-based approach • enhance teachers’ professional knowledge in designing and conducting Supported Reading sessions • scaffold teachers to develop reading activities to foster students’ critical thinking skills and cater for learner diversity
Guided Research Questions • What are the effective strategies for designing and conducting the SuRE reading workshops? • How can reading materials be used effectively in order to cater for learner diversity in the SuRE reading workshops? • What is the impact of Supported Reading on student English language learning?

What is Supported Reading? • One of the 5 teaching strategies for reading • An opportunity to talk, read and think their way purposefully through a text • Enables pupils to experience what real reading is within a supported environment one teacher + a class of pupils
Design of Learning Environment in SuRE Community Knowledge centred Learner centred Assessment centred How People Learn, Expanded Edition, p.134, Figure 6.1 Bransford et al. (1999)
In Supported Reading Lessons: Teachers: • use pre-reading tasks to activate prior knowledge; • use effective questioning to foster critical thinking; and • teach reading skills and strategies in context. Students: • read independently with a purpose; • give critical responses to the text; and • talk about messages and meaning in the text.
Outcomes(achieved by the current SEED School) • Students have moved towards achieving reading independence • A variety of text types has been used • Supported Reading has been incorporated in the task-based curriculum • Students have become reflective learners and critical thinkers
Through SuRE, we explore: • the impact of Supported Reading on student learning • effective strategies for the learning and teaching of the SuRE reading workshops • the use of appropriate reading texts and resources for KS2 Silent Reading Questioning
Seed School • Consolidate existing P4 and P5 units of work • One seconded teacher to develop and implement new units of work for P6 • LETs in KS2 plan and teach SuRE workshops
Seed School The school is expected to: • nominate an experienced and committed English teacher to be seconded to the NET Section for a year • allocate at least one hour per week for collaborative lesson preparation for all project teachers • allocate time in the scheme of work to complete at least two units of work during the school year • support data collection, e.g. classroom observation, video recordings of SuRE lessons, interviewing students/teachers • share with other schools their experiences in conducting the project
Seconded Teacher (ST) The ST is expected to: • collaboratively develop units of work with ATs in the NET Section and participate in professional development programmes on relevant topics • take the leading role in the SuRE Project within the school • develop, teach and evaluate SuRE workshops with project teachers • visit network schools to share good practice
Resources • A set of reading books for each Primary 6 class will be provided by the NET Section • The books will be ordered in June 2013 based on the decision made by the Seconded Teacher and the SuRE ATs
