Neuro – Iggy ch. 44 C. Matthews RN, MSN Spring 09
To begin: • Go to your fundamental’s textbook and review their info on the neurological assessment. If you have a friend in first yr. – ask them if you can photocopy pages ____ to ______ - this is an excellent review. • Go to your assessment textbook and do the same. • Go to your notes from Dr. Osteen’s classes re: the neuro system.
Page 923 – building the nervous system from most basic to complete. K+ - likes to be in the kitchen (inside the cell) Na+ likes Nature, so he and CL like to stay outside
PNS drugs • For PNS drugs – go to page 932 and under the red typing that says “Effect of Sympathetic stimulation” writesympathomimetics/anti-cholinergics– because this is a list of what those types of drugs cause to happen. • What every nurse should know (**NCLEX type of info) – these drugs are Rx for one problem, but RN must be aware of other body responses.
For example • Sympathomimetics such as atrovent is given to your pt. with emphysema. • Acording to the table on page 963 this drug will effect the lungs by dilating the bronchi – helping breathing. constricting the lungs blood vessels. • But, the RN needs to be aware that this drug will also constrict lung blood vessels, which will increase afterload for the heart. It can increase the HR and dilate pupils. So, it’s your job to constantly assess the C-V system. • Dilating pupils is contraindicated in a pt. with narrow – angle glaucoma. What if your pt has emphysema AND glaucoma? It’s your job to question the prudence of giving this patient atrovent. http://www.drugs.com/drug-class/anticholinergic-bronchodilators.html
PNS drugs • For PNS drugs – go to page 932 and under the red typing that says “Effect of Sympathetic stimulation” write parasympathomimetics/cholinergics – because this is a list of what those types of drugs cause to happen. • The RN is responsible to assess the pt. for side effects.
