What is Remote Access? • The ability to get accesses to a computer or a network from a remote distance • Used for telecommuters accessing to the corporations’ network, home users accessing Internet
Methods of Remote Access • Dial – up connection over regular telephone line is the common method • Dedicated line between a computer and a remote LAN, is more expensive and less flexible, but is faster • ISDN combines dial-up connection with a faster data transfer
What is Good? • Easy to install • Good for IT professional deal with people who have difficult conversations on the computer environments • Manage your network servers easier
3 remote assess/control software • GoToMyPC • What is GoToMyPC • Good and bad points of GoToMyPC • Setup • Security • VNC • What is VNC • Server overview • Network setup • TightVNC • Old window version • Windows XP • Features of TightVNC
What is GoToMyPC? • GoToMyPC is one of the remote access options • It is simply the fastest, easiest and most secure way to access a PC remotely • It features on-the-fly access from any location connected to the Internet and the highest level of security. • It allows us to work on our office PCs from home • Increase flexibility and productivity by allowance in access of files, programs and networks in an easy, secure access from anywhere
Good Points of GoToMyPC • Easy setup • Better security features • Built in management features
Setup • Go to the GoToMyPC site at www.gotomypc.com • Register, download and install GoToMyPC on your Internet-connected host computer. • Remotely access your computer from any PC with a Web browser at GoToMyPC with no additional software to install • Begin working on your host computer as if you were sitting in front of it. You can immediately access your email, applications, documents and network resources.
Security • Its traffic is encrypted with Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit encryption using a secure challenge-response password authentication protocol. • It removes the motivation for users to install no secure modems on their PCs, since they use their existing internet connection. • Screen Blanking • Keyboard Locking
Bad Points of GoToMyPC • Needs broadband connections for best performance • Relatively more expensive than other remote access options
Things we can do with GoToMyPC • Transfer files back and forth. • Print from your remote PC to a local printer. • Access your PC from another PC, Mac, Linux or Unix. • Invite others to share your PC to collaborate or do demos... and much more.
What is VNC? • VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing • A remote control software thru TCP/IP protocol • Commonly used on Windows or Unix system. • Development by AT&T Laboratories Cambridge
Getting Started with VNC • Consisted two components • Server • Viewer • Advantage • Free download • Download at http://realvnc.com/ • Small program • Easy to install & operate
Server Properties View • Setup Properties • Setup Password • Disable Remote keyboard & Pointer • Disable Local keyboard & Pointer • Default Display Port Number would be 0 & Auto
Viewer (Remote Controller) • Enter remote IP address or Host name • Password Authentication • Successfully connect • Fail to connect • One workstation to many servers
Network Setup • Direct Connection • No additional setup • Connect to IP address directly • Network Under Router (Linksys, Dlink…) • Setup port number 5500 or 5900 on Forwarding Service. • Find out what is IP address • Ipconfig, Email heading, netstat….
What is TightVNC? • It includes a lot of new features, improvements, optimizations and bugfixes over the original of VNC version . • It is still free, cross-platform and compatible with the standard VNC. • It can be used to perform remote control and administration tasks in Windows and mixed network environments. • It can be very helpful in distance learning and remote customer support
Old Windows Version • Most of today's internet uses IPv4, which is now nearly twenty years old • both client (VNCviewer) and Server (WinVNC) were changed to support Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) as transport protocol.
Windows XP • IPv6 is the "next generation" protocol designed by the IETF to replace the current version Internet Protocol, IP Version 4 ("IPv4"). • In the actual IPv6 release only one protocol is supported at the same time, it means that TightVNC only works in IPv4 or IPv6 at time. • If XP has the IPv6 support installed, the server run under IPv6 • Due to the Microsoft IPv6 stack implementation, it is not possible to make IPv4 connections when the server is running in IPv6, a future work will support it.
TightVNC Features • Local cursor handling • Efficient compression algorithms • Configurable compression levels • Optional JPEG compression • Enhanced Web browser access • Support for two passwords (full-control and read-only). • Advanced Properties dialog in WinVNC • Flexible configuration options • Automatic SSH tunneling on Unix
Compatibility and Interoperability • TightVNC is fully compatible with the standard RFB protocol used in VNC.
Conclusion • Which is better?? • The answer depends on our usage • GotoMyPC has a better feature in security and management • VNC – a small, easy to use and free program • TightVNC has a better feature in web-browsing / internet
Recommendation • For us, we prefer VNC because….. • It is a small program that we can download • Easily • Freely • And, has sufficient security and management features
