Installing WSS 3.0 • Install WSS 3.0 binaries • Run Configuration wizard • The wizard will provision the Central Administration site and create configuration database • When finished, configure your SP environment using Central Administration site
Don’t do Basic install http://www.sharepointjoel.com/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=260
Basic Install Issues • Lack of manageability • Authentication issues (half-baked Kerberos) • Service accounts – there are none • Moving from a single server to a farm is a nightmare • SQL Express limitations: 1 CPU, 1 GB of RAM max, 4GB storage limit
Other Lists • Announcements • Surveys • Link lists • Contacts • Custom list – create your own fields!
WSS 3.0 Technical Specs • Supports stand-alone or farm installation • Requires Windows Server 2003 or 2008 • 2.5 GHz CPU (3 GHZ recommended) • 1 GB of RAM (2 GB recommended) • Requires IIS 6.0 (with SMTP for email functionality) • .NET Framework 3.0 • ASP.NET 2.0 enabled • SQL Server 2000 SP4 (SQL 2005 SP2 recommended)
WSS 3.0 Hardware requirements Source: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288751.aspx

Takeaways • The “Free SharePoint” version (WSS 3.0) offers a lot of OOB functionality: rapid site provisioning, AD integration, MS Office integration, versioning support • MOSS 2007 offers all of WSS functionality plus additional templates, user profiles (My Sites), Business Data Catalog (BDC), robust enterprise search, BI, RSS feeds • Both products can be customized and extended using SharePoint Designer (free program), PowerShell, or Visual Studio (.NET dev)
Next steps • Study MS resources: • For end users- MS Office Online SharePoint site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/default.aspx • For IT Pros- SharePoint Server on TechNet: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/default.aspx • SharePoint Community Portal: http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/sharepoint/default.aspx • Set-up test VMs using both WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 • Avoid “shiny object syndrome” • Avoid “Basic Install”
