Providing direction for the weak and erring… • The outline as to why people fall away is given in the parable of the sower (Luke 8:4-15). • Our Lord speaks here of four soils; that represent four kinds of hearts (Verses 11-15). • The first two hearts will fall away, while the third would encompass the weak. • All of those will be lost. (John 15:5-8)

  3. Some brethren often react in wrong ways when a Christian stops attending • Anger - Rather than being angry because they have "left us“ -- we need to be concerned that they have left the Lord! • Ignoring the individual - Likely, these people (the ones doing the ignoring) are the very ones in the weak category -- and only react when things affect them personally. • Offer excuses - By trying to answer "why” -- they end up justifying them. • The purpose of this sermon is to encourage us to act more like the Savior (Luke 15:1-7).

  4. Why do people fall away? • Drifting (Hebrews 2:1-2) • Isolation (1 Corinthians 12:20-27) • Failure to deal properly with remorse (Matthew 27:3-5) • No direction (1 Corinthians 15:58…) • “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel” (Phil 1:27; NKJV)

  5. How can we bring these lost ones back? • Our hearts must be INTO what we are trying to accomplish (Galatians 6:1-2)! • If you are unhappy as a Christian, you may do more harm than good! • We must be willing to give of our time to be with people (Philippians 2:17). • People need to know that you really do care.

  6. Steps to restoration… • You need to be able to find an open door (Acts 16:9). • You must get an open Bible (Hebrews 4:12-13). • We must get them to take NEW steps (Luke 9:23-24; 14:33; Gal. 4:18-19). • The church MUST practice its collective responsibility (2 Thessalonians 3:14-15)

  7. Providing direction for the weak and erring… • The necessary steps involved for restoring one who is weak and or erring. • We must all share the load in order to make real change. • In working to bring others back, we need an open Bible along with an open door to talk to these individuals. • Be prepared to give of your time, but before that, truly examine your own spiritual wellness before reaching out to others.

  8. Providing direction for the weak and erring… • Let us all be encouraged to do a better job of… • Providing direction for others • Aiding them to overcome feelings of guilt • Encouraging them to get back with the brethren? • Yes! But ultimately…Getting back into a good standing before the Lord! • It IS possible to successfully reach some of those who have gone astray; the Lord tells us so!
