Topic #2 Section 1: The Solar System
Planetary Groups Terrestrial Planets • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars • Highlighted by relatively small size and rocky surface. Jovian Planets • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune • Highlighted by a very large size and primarily made up of gases.
Planetary Groups • The terrestrial planets are much more dense than the Jovian planets.
Planet Makeup • Planets are composed of three different categories of substances. • Gases: Substances that melt at very low temperatures • Rocks: Solid substances with high melting points. • Ices: Solids that have a wide range of melting and freezing points.
Planetary Makeup • Jovian planets have very deep and thick atmospheres. • The majority of the mass of the Jovian planets is found in their atmospheres. • Terrestrial planets have very thin atmospheres because they are located closer to the sun. • The suns gravity attracts the gas molecules away from the small terrestrial planets.
Formation of the Solar System • Clouds of gas and dust in space are called nebulas. • The Nebular Theory states that our solar system formed from the increasing gravity of one of these spinning nebulas. • As the gas and dust in this nebula began colliding small irregularly shaped objects called planetesimals began to form. • These planetesimals would later form into planets.
