  2. What is Taiko? • Focuses on nature, respect & ensemble work • The word taiko translates to drum • It has been around for over 1400 years • Influenced by Asian martial arts • In ancient times it was used for battle, prayer, and matsuri (festivals)

  3. Rei (respect) Traditions • Shoes are removed. • Teacher is referred to as “sensei”

  4. Terms to Know • Sensei: teacher or master • Uchite: a taiko drummer • KumiDaiko: teamwork • Kiai: energy • Kata: form, or stance; posture to play • Ma: space (a rest) • Ji-Uchi: the steady beat

  5. Parts of a Taiko Drum • Bachi: dowels, or sticks, used to play • Ko: the body of the drum • Hara: center of the skin (bass) • Fuchi: outside of the skin (tone) • Kawa: the skin

  6. What does it take to be a taiko drummer? • Karada: strength of body, power, stamina • Kokoro: strength of mind and spirit • Waza: musical skills • Rei: respect, communication
