Pabasa Meaning • A chant-like song that is imported from Spanish missionaries and is taken from a ‘pasyon’ booklet. • Pasyon book contains verses that narrate the life, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. • It was composed in the seventeenth century by Spanish missionaries. • The first Filipino version was made by Father Gaspar Aquino De Belen in 1704.

  3. Pabasa Ritual • A family affair or a village affair, usually starts after the Palm Sunday mass • It is a 24 hour continuous ritual • Usually sung acapella-style, but you can add instruments if you want to

  4. Pabasa Reading • 1. As a rule, the public "pabasa" is done continuously. The readers continue to read the book nonstop. 2. In various parts of the book of passion are the following letters • "A R A L" - and may also be chanted asAngunangletra'yAnunsasyonIkalawa'yResureksyonIkatlo ay AdorasyonAngika'pat ay LamintasyonAralngMahalnaPoon.
