How to be Research Active @ CMU • Continue the momentum from your previous studies/institution(s) [Don’t lose time and energy in the transition to CMU] • Key Traits: Discipline, Persistence, Thick Skin, Hard Work/Drive, Work Space, Work/Life Balance, Collegial, Creative, Thrift, Family Support • Develop a Fertile Research Agenda & Research Stream • Access & Utilize Resources: • Time (teaching vs. research schedule) • Funds (ORSP/FRCE, department, college, outside grants) • Mentors (department, college, other [e.g., develop a research network]) • Develop research clusters through strategic faculty hiring
Advantages of Conducting Research @ CMU • Outlet/Publication flexibility (though a greater emphasis is being placed upon “quality”) • Sufficient internal resources (if you know where to find, access, and utilize them) • Reasonable research expectations (know your “evolving” departmental standards) • Flexible teaching schedule • Willing undergraduates • Good honors program • Excellent library • Potential development of research clusters (especially with an ageing faculty)
Disadvantages of Conducting Research @ CMU • Relatively heavy teaching loads • Low institutional name recognition • Relatively small pockets of research funds stretched across many programs • Historically cumbersome IRB process @ CMU (self-inflicted) • Few or no graduate students • Relatively large service duties • Little institutional recognition • Leadership turnover at ORSP (at least 5 different leaders in 10 years) • Uneven distribution of faculty rank
