Branching Out aims • Review the evidence base for greenspace mental health projects • Develop effective partnerships between the environmental and healthcare sectors • Develop a structured programme for Branching Out based upon existing evidence • Evaluate the benefits of participation in Branching Out

  3. Programme structure • 12 week programme plus awards ceremony • 3 groups running concurrently • Peri-urban woodlands • Activities designed to increase physical activity, team building, social skills and tool use over time

  4. Content of Sessions • Physical activity • Bushcraft • Use of natural materials • Learning • Conservation • Environmental art • Photography • Awards ceremony

  5. Who participates? Mental health resource centres Inpatient services Scottish Association for Mental Health Other charities Other (Addictions, RT, Esteem)

  6. Referrals • Overall agreements with NHS boards: • Incident reporting • Data protection • Evaluation • Partnership agreement with each service: • Staffing requirements • Referral procedure • Policies and procedures • Activities and sites • Evaluation

  7. Evaluation • Quantitative • Low attrition rates • Significant increase in physical activity “Tuesdays can’t come soon enough for me. I get away out and forget all my troubles….” “When I’m out here it’s like a sense of freedom” • Qualitative • 5 key themes • Powerful quotes & experiences “The different sights and sounds and smells is very different from the hospital environment that I’m used to”

  8. Ongoing evaluation • Pre and post measures • Rosenberg self esteem scale • Physical activity recall • Uptake of new activities, training and education

Branching Out expansion Original FCS Branching Out project - 9 groups per year since Sept 2007 In discussion with NHS Forth Valley about pilot at Larbert Hospital Pilot Branching Out project starting Sept 2010 with NHSGGC. Three Branching Out groups running 2010/11 Developed in partnership with: Funding recently awarded to run Branching Out groups in 2011/12
