MS&E 410/610 Physical Metallurgy: Fundamentals and Applications Al monocoque NiAl turbine blade Cu interconnects NiTi Stent After more than 5000 years of development, metals continue to provide the highest levels of performance and lowest cost in a wide variety of applications. From high temperature, high strength, lightweight alloys for aerospace applications, to electrical, optical, chemical, or structural components in nanofabricated devices to biocompatible medical prostheses and implants, metals are used in many high-technology applications. MS&E 410 will cover the materials science of metals including: • shape memory and smart metals • superalloys for high temperature and high strength applications • intermetallics for magnetic (information storage) and chemical (fuel cells) applications • amorphous metals • ferrous and nonferrous alloy metallurgy This class is suitable for upper level undergraduates or graduate students with some background in structure, thermodynamics and kinetics of materials. Students taking this class will obtain an introduction suitable for a career in research or advanced product development. Class meets Tues and Thurs 10:10-11:25 in Hollister 372
