Who Are We? • What Do We Do? • How do we listen? • How do we voice/speak out? • ANV aims to provide a national platform to hear the views of all children & young people from Care age 5-25 years • We listen to what they say and create campaigns, networks & events so we can influence policy & government
ANV Messages & Campaigns… Education Campaign Over 200 young people told us what the main barriers are to getting a good education. Out of 20 issues young people said getting an education was the most important. Housing Survey Almost 600 young people, leaving care & housing professionals were surveyed
Education: A National Perspective • Top 3 Issues: • Education consistently the top priority • ‘Please Sir!’ • Barriers to getting a good education • Select Committee Evidence from young people • Support and incentive schemes for young people
University: my reflections • Genuine support from my Aftercare worker was crucial- link in with personal tutor! • Student support must be adapted so that young people from Care are prioritised: e.g. Financial support; counselling services.
CYP Bill: Care Matters • Designated teacher • Flexible approach • “I always feel like everyone knows my business and the school treats me differently” • Multi-agency working • Get the complete picture in order to meet the child’s needs • “All I wanted was some encouragement from my foster carer but I didn’t get it” • Other Points: • Encourage other modes of learning/success • Remember Super Sonics! • Listen to young people! • Care leavers need emotional and practical support • “Leaving care shouldn’t be an event but a process” • Post-18-21 success
