  2. The Celts • Celts are the first to record history of Britain. • Migrated to Britain in 400 B.C. • Mostly hunters and farmers • Animistic Religion-spirits in everything

  3. Romans • Roman invasion lasted ~500 years. • Brought to England Christianity and all aspects and ideas of Roman culture. • Retreated in 407 A.D. due to invasions of Rome by Germanic tribes from the north.

  4. German Invasions • Main invaders were Angles and Saxons who were pagans probably looking for more fertile land to farm or fresh waters to fish. • Happened over an extended period of time, not suddenly. • These pagan invaders were eventually converted to Christianity (7th c) after a Benedictine monk was sent to Briton as a missionary from Pope Gregory. • The “English” history that we know today can mainly be contributed to Bede who was a churchman, in his Ecclesiastical History, 731. • Written from an Anglo-Saxon perspective in Latin.

  5. Danes & Norse • These were Vikings who took to the seas for piracy. • In 871, King Alfred the Great ascended to the throne. He was responsible for keeping the Danish invasion limited to the north and east and keeping the Saxon land free in the West & south. He also did a lot to preserve the culture of the Anglo-Saxons and encourage a rebirth in learning and education. • Led a project to translate Bede’s History into English as well as other important works.
