More Electron Configuration Terms. Valence Electrons. The valence electrons of an atom are the total number of electrons that exist in the highest energy level (highest # coefficient). The max number of valence e- is 8  2 e- in the s sublevel  6 e- in the p sublevel.

  1. More Electron Configuration Terms

  2. Valence Electrons • The valence electrons of an atom are the total number of electrons that exist in the highest energy level (highest # coefficient). • The max number of valence e- is 8  2 e- in the s sublevel  6 e- in the p sublevel

  3. Lewis Dot Diagrams are drawn using the elemental symbol and only the valence e-. The e- do not pair up until they have to. • Ex. Determine the shorthand electron configuration, and draw the LDD for Cl.

  4. Ions • Ions are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons. • Anions are negatively charged ions. They are created when electrons are added to an atom. Ex. Br – • Cations are positively charged ions. They are created from electron being taken from the atom. Ex. Ca2+

  5. You can show ions when writing electron configuration Ex. Ca2+ Br -

  6. Isoelectronic – when atoms and/or ions that have the same number of electrons, therefore the same e- configuration Ex. Br - and Kr Are the following isoelectronic? (a) S2- and Ar (b)Zn2+ and Cu
