Dare We Call it Murder? A Sermon on Exodus 21:22-25
Abortion in History • I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy. In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art. –Hippocrates • You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish. –The Didache • In our case, murder being once for all forbidden, we may not destroy even the fetus in the womb, while as yet the human being derives blood from other parts of the body for its sustenance. To hinder birth is merely a speedier man-killing; nor does it matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to the birth. That is a man which is going to be one; you have the fruit already in the seed. -Tertullian
Why is Abortion Wrong? • Abortion is murder. • Abortion destroys God’s work. • Abortion assaults God’s image. • Abortion denies God’s authority. • Abortion is idolatry. • Abortion abuses women.
Arguing without the Bible • A baby has a heartbeat at three weeks • A baby has brainwaves at six weeks • A baby can grab things at 11 weeks • A baby feels pain fully at 14 weeks • A baby recognizes her mother’s voice at 20 weeks • A baby is viable at 20-21 weeks • Most abortions happen after 7 weeks • Partial birth abortions are performed after 20 weeks
What should we do? • Pray • Victims and Oppressors • Speak the truth in love • Truth about abortion • Truth about sin and Christ • Politics • Protect and Restrict • Willing to accept any advance • Intervene • Clinics and action
