#1 Learning from the Master of Silent Film Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times”
1. Describe what Charlie Chaplin does with his body and face to depict what is going on and how he feels about it. Even without words, you can clearly tell what is going on in the film thanks to Chaplin’s facial expressions and body movements. Charlie uses facial expressions to show the audience how he is feeling at the current time. For example, when the machine that is feeding him is malfunctioning and won’t stop feeding him corn, his facial expressions tell us that he's keeping calm but kind of freaking out at the same time. Also, when the machine feeds him for the first time, you can tell by his face that he’s amazed because his eyes are kind of popping and he follows the machines every movement.
2. Does he have a common way of moving, walking, and standing that is his trademark style? If so describe it. When he is walking, he walks with his feet pointed outwards and his elbows are stuck out when he walks. Also, everything Chaplin does is done happily. For example, when he walks into the washroom he walks in like he’s not even tired. He moves around as if something amazing has just happened. You can also tell by the way he moves that there is excitement in him.
3. Do you think his costume draw attention to the movement? In other words, how does he express what is going on? Yes I do think the costume draws attention to the movement because he’s in work clothes, it just wouldn’t make sense if he was in something else like a suit for example. In one part, he goes on with the wrench and tightens all the bolts and then people come to talk to him and he does the same to their nose. It just wouldn’t be the same if he was wearing casual clothes or formal clothes.
Who is Charlie Chaplin Anyways? Charlie Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in East Street, Walworth, London, England. Charlie has much natural talent, his father was a vocalist and actor; and his mother was an actress and singer who was well known. At the age of 10, Charlie and his brother Sydney had to take care of themselves due to their fathers death and their mothers illness. Charlie’s first real stage show was when he was fourteen years old as “Billy” the page boy in “Sherlock Holmes”. Near the ending of the show, he decided to pursue a career in comedy, which took him to the United States as a featured player with the Fred Karno troupe. Upon his second tour with the troupe, Chaplin was offered a motion picture contract; “Making A Living” which gave him much more popularity. Once his contract with “Mutual” expired, Charlie decided to become an independent producer for more freedom to do what he wanted to do. Charlie Chaplin has made several different films and been on many tours that have gained laughs all around the world. In 1914, Charlie debuted a new character in the film “ Kid Auto Races at Venice” called “Tramp”. This character was so popular he continued to use it throughout many films, but then retired the character in the film “Modern Times”. Through his last years, Charlie not only was talented in acting, but also in sports, music and writing as well. He was a self-taught musician. He has published and composed several songs and he also financed and produced most of his motion pictures. On December 25, 1977, Chaplin passed away, leaving 9 children to lead on his legacy. Charlie Chaplin was one of the best comedians that made the audience laugh without even saying a word on stage.
What inspires me about Charlie Chaplin • The thing that inspires me about Charlie Chaplin is his charisma. In every film he has been apart of, he always manages to make the audience laugh whether he uses slapstick or just simple gags. Today, if a famous persons child was to become an actor, most people would say “Oh he’s only famous because of his parents” but I believe it wouldn’t count for Charlie because he went through a rough time and I believe he did make a name for himself which inspires me.
