The Tomato • The tomato probably originated in the highlands of the west coast of South America. • The Spanish were the first people to distribute the tomato throughout their colonies in the Caribbean. • It then started to spread to the Philippines and then soon was all over the world.
The Main producers of the Tomato in Europe • Italy is the largest producer of Tomatoes in Europe. • Especially in the south of Italy. • Spain the second largest producer of tomatoes in Europe, even though they introduced the tomato to Europe.
The 'Tomatina' Tomato Fight • The festival on the last Wednesday of August is called 'the Tomatina' • Every year around 30,00 people go to the Spanish town of Bunol to throw more than 240,000 pounds of tomatoes at each other. • It is a very important festival in Spanish Culture.
