Journal #9:Look at the two photos below. Now picture yourself in the man’s position, in the picture on the left, it is 50 degrees below zero, and you are trying to make it to a camp before dark. After dark the temperature will drop further below -50 degrees and you chances for survival are slim to none. What are some thoughts running through your mind? What are some of the forces of nature you might encounter on your journey? Think about temperature, wildlife, and storms. http://blog.mlive.com/projectmayhem/2007/10/large_inwild.jpg http://www.alaskawildernessexpeditions.com/images/pic_home2.jpg
Alaska • U.S. Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for two cents an acre. • In 1896 gold was discovered in the Yukon which sparked the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898. • Jack London, well known author of stories like White Fang, Call of the Wild, and To Build a Fire, was among the many who traveled to the Alaskan Yukon hoping to find gold. • But for London the trip to Alaska was more than just an attempt to find gold, he once said “ True, the new territory was mostly barren; but its several hundred thousand square miles of frigidity at least gave breathing space to those who else would have suffocated at home.”

What literary element will we be looking for? Dramatic Irony In Chopin’s The Story of an Hour we found that we, the readers, knew that Mrs. Mallard was ACTUALLY relieved and glad to finally be free from the limits set upon her by her husband and society, and her sister EXPECTED that during the time Mrs. Mallard spent alone in her room, whispering to herself, was her way of grieving for her “beloved” husband.
What element of plot will we be exploring? Conflict The struggle between two opposing forces. Can take two forms: 1. Internal 2. External A character’s efforts to resolve conflict form the basis for the plot of a literary work.
